I first started studying nutrition and health about two decades ago. I was actually a fully qualified dietician. That was back before nutrition was really popular. These days, just about everybody's on some kind of fad diet. Why is more people going to the gym more than ever before? And that's great, but it's also giving a rise to this explosion of misinformation, particularly on the internet. Especially for people that don't necessarily wanna be a fitness fanatic or a gym junkie, just want to learn how to get healthier and age better.

It can be really confusing for a lot of people and there's a lot of crap out there, so that's actually what motivated me to be a dietician in the first place. I wanted to cut through the nonsense and understand the real signs. So what I come to understand about getting healthy is that there's a lot more than just knowledge about diet and exercise. It's so much to do with mindset about motivation, about getting guilt out of the way, cutting through procrastination, changing habits and getting unstuck from the on again, off again yo yo cycles that keep a lot of people trapped.

So what I did was, I set my mind on the mind. I learned about psychology, especially when it comes to how to change your way of thinking to get healthy and most importantly how to stay healthy. There's no shortage of very highly strung dieticians, physios, especially personal trainers. Very high anxiety, often very narcissistic, really good at presenting the really cool Instagram image on the outside, but underneath, quite often their life's a mess because they haven't balanced the other important aspects of their life. They're exclusively focused on the outside. But that means the most important part, which is focusing on the inside.

As a dietician, probably one of the most fascinating and eye opening experiences was working with the elderly and the terminally ill. Because when you see enough people in the final chapters of their life, you start to see recurring patterns. What you notice is that people that live longer and healthier, they ate well and they're more active, not just to look good but because they have a higher sense of self worth, they take care of themselves. They also take care of others. When we're old, the two biggest killers are loneliness and boredom. It's really important to have a good relationship with loves ones, to have good social connections, but not necessarily to be dependent on other people. The biggest killer is boredom. Human beings are not meant to be bored. We become very self destructive in the face of boredom. So people that live longer and healthier especially, they tend to live a life of purpose. They're more, not only physically active, but mentally active. They're more engaged in what they're doing.

You see this all the time in the elderly. They'll have something that they're really physically and especially mentally engaged in, keeps them busy, right? And then they might have a fall, break their hip, or for whatever reason, they can't keep doing that thing that they're engaged in. They get really unmotivated, their immune system starts to go downhill and at that age, that can often mean essentially losing the will to live. So one of the most important lessons and observations I took away from that experience was that you've got to find something to be passionate about. You've gotta find a strong purpose to your life, but particularly you've gotta find something that gets you to focus your energy on something bigger than yourself. A cause, a community, some kind of purpose to get you to think outside yourself. People that are very self absorbed in their thinking, that's a recipe for self sabotage. They don't tend to fair too well in the long run.

Either way, the point is there's a lot more to good health than meets the eye.
